How long does EDI onboarding really take?
When you're preparing to work with a new retailer, getting your EDI up and running quickly is usually a priority. You have orders to process, deadlines to meet, and customers waiting, so the last thing you want is a lengthy setup process.
The good news is that EDI onboarding doesn't always take weeks. At eZCom, we can sometimes get suppliers set up almost immediately, depending on their requirements.
However, there's an important distinction between having your EDI software ready and being approved to trade with a retailer. While we can move quickly on our side, external requirements such as retailer testing, approvals, and system integrations can affect the overall timeline.
How quickly can EDI onboarding happen?
For suppliers using Lingo without a custom integration, onboarding can be relatively straightforward, particularly when connecting with retailers we already support.
Because we've established connections with a wide range of retailers, we don't need to build everything from scratch. In some cases, we can get your account configured and ready to use almost immediately.
You can explore the retailers we support in our retailer EDI directory.
The timeline becomes less predictable when additional requirements are involved. Even when your EDI setup is complete, there may be steps outside our control before you're approved to begin exchanging live documents.
What can slow down EDI onboarding?
Several factors can affect how quickly a supplier goes live, and not all of them depend on the EDI provider.
- Retailer testing: Some retailers require suppliers to complete testing before processing live orders. This can include validating purchase orders, invoices, and advance ship notices (ASNs) to make sure everything meets their specifications.
- Retailer approvals: Certain retailers have their own onboarding procedures, approval processes, or testing schedules. Even when the technical setup is complete, suppliers may need to wait for the retailer to confirm they're ready to trade.
- ERP and warehouse integrations: If you're connecting EDI with an ERP, accounting platform, or warehouse management system, additional configuration and testing may be needed to ensure information moves correctly between systems.
- Third-party coordination: Depending on your setup, onboarding may involve your retailer, ERP provider, warehouse partner, or other vendors. Each party has its own requirements and timelines.
These aren't necessarily complications with your EDI software. They're part of making sure orders, shipments, and invoices are exchanged accurately once you're live.
And importantly, many of these requirements apply regardless of which EDI provider you're using.
How eZCom helps keep onboarding moving
While we can't control retailer testing schedules or third-party approvals, we can make sure everything on our side moves as efficiently as possible.
Our team works with you from the beginning to understand your retailer requirements, existing systems, and any integrations you need. This helps us identify potential delays early and make sure the technical setup is handled properly.
We also help navigate retailer requirements and coordinate the EDI side of the process, so you're not left trying to figure everything out yourself. If testing or approvals are required, we'll help you understand what's involved and what needs to happen next.
You can learn more about our EDI integrations and how we connect with existing business systems.
And once you're up and running, our support doesn't stop. With fully managed EDI, our team is here to help with retailer changes, technical questions, and the day-to-day issues that can come up as your business grows.
Ready to get started?
EDI onboarding can be quick, and at eZCom, we'll always aim to get our part completed as soon as possible. But the overall timeline depends on your retailer's requirements, any necessary testing, and the systems you're connecting.
